research and analysis of our chosen genre

We decided to choose a genre that would challenge our media abilities but would also be enjoyable to work with, we assessed which mainstream genres were entering the cinemas in this time, as we didn’t want to make a genre that had a variety of competition and wouldn’t make our film as popular. From researching what mainstream genres were entering the cinemas, we opted to not go with horror and chose to go with an adventure film. we chose this because there weren’t many adventure films hitting production where as some other mainstream genres, this enabled our competition to be decreased.

The next process; was to decide what kind of adventure film we were going to have. we thought it was best to have a family oriented adventure film as it increases the target market and everyone could enjoy the film. This was a good idea because if we have an increased target market then there is a more likely chance of being a bigger success. We decided to go with the generic conventions of a family adventure film, this would include: humour, innuendos, a friendship group, a surreal story line, a protagonist. Antagonist and a happy ending. We thought this would be the best way as the whole family can familiarise themselves with the stereotypical adventure film.

We looked into successful adventure films such as Jumanji and the Goonies for inspiration and for certain conventions they used in their films that made them so successful.

The Goonies:  Mikey and Brandon are brothers and their family is preparing to move because developers want to build a golf course in their neighbourhood but can’t be stopped if unless enough money is raised to stop the construction which is very unlikely. But when Mikey stumbles upon a treasure map of the famed "One-Eyed" Willy's hidden fortune, Mikey, Brandon, and their friends "Chunk" , "Mouth", "Andy", "Stef", and "Data", calling themselves The Goonies, set out on a quest to find the treasure in hopes of saving their neighbourhood. The treasure is in a cavern, but the entrance to the cavern is under the house of evil thief Mama Fratelli and her sons Jake Fratelli, Francis Fratelli, and the severely disfigured Lotney "Sloth" Fratelli. The Goonies have to stay one step ahead of the Fratellis and find the treasure while avoiding a system of traps Sloth befriends the Goonies and decides to help them save the neighbourhood.

We thought that having a friendship group of different characters was a good idea as the audience could differentiate favourites and grown a interest on certain characters. The film opening also caught our eye with the bike scene.

Age:

·         Children seen as protagonists- stereotypical for a family adventure film.

·         Adults seen as antagonists- stereotypical for a family adventure film.

·         Children have loads more independence.

·         Teenagers frown upon younger kids.

Gender:

·         Males seen as protagonists

·         Females seen as damsels in distress

Jumanji:  After being trapped in a jungle board game for 26 years, a Man-Child wins his release from the game. But, no sooner has he arrived that he is forced to play again, and this time sets the creatures of the jungle loose on the city. Now it is up to him to stop them.

We thought the storyline was quite similar to ours and would have been effective to make a storyline fairly similar to Jumanji, we used Jumanji as faded guidelines to help us rough out the narrative of our film.
